Vow to Smoke

Always a Quitter; Always a Returner

A Bad Way to Invoke You Father, But the Subject and the Fault are Both Mine.

So, it was time to leave cigarettes,
not today, or yesterday
or when you said you would
consider the possibility
three weeks ago when she
forbade you from taking Her’s.

When I’ve let myself be aged
in this youth
two days earlier would have sufficed
when the first signs
of my withering
dropped like Newton’s apple
and talked me into its gravity.

But I’m a bird
I’m promiscuous
there have been no pimps
when there have been cigarettes.

Then I made a vow
then I changed it this morning.
So, I will be returning, I’ve told Her
but to return, I’ve to go really far away.

Until my neck slackens
My conscience lightens
My heart tightens

So, one day with you:
My light ashen
My lips smoken
and, You’re not mistaken.
