This Poet is a Coward

Poems do not unmask, they mask what you must not

A Fassbinder line gets imprinted at the Gujarat National Law University, May 2023

A poet is told
he must hide,
but he is already
in hiding.
Eaten away
by everything he cannot do,
now with nothing,
he then became a poet.

A poet is
at all times, drunken or sober,
make no mistake,
a coward. Nothing but a coward.
He hides
behind what he writes,
his feelings are veiled

because he cannot stand nudity.

But now his words are
in the throes of a bloody battle,
he is asked to hide them.

When they came they said:
You are still an obvious man
Your mask isn’t enough.

The only way to hide the hidden
is an obvious fate,
bring them Death.

But there’s the funny thing,
death only brings nakedness.

Death is confession.
